On April 2, 2012 the 1940 census will be released by the US National Archives. The National Archives and Records Administration will be providing free online access to the 1940 census. This will be the most detailed census yet released. Ancestry.com will begin indexing them immediately but until then you can use the Enumeration District to find your ancestors.
What is in the 1940 Census
Two pages of Data include:
Complete Address, Owned or Rented, Home Value, All members of households, Relationship to HOH, Personal Description, Education,
Place of Birth and Citizenship, Residence in 1935, Parents Place of Birth, Native language, Veteran status, Occupation, Work status including WPA status or Gov. or Private work , detailed occupations information, and income, and for the first time if registered for Social Security
